The park in a paragraph

Uganda’s oldest and largest national park

The Victoria Nile forces itself through a seven-metre gap in the rift escarpment and drops in a thundering plume that gives the park its name. Below the falls the river widens into a slow, wildlife-thick channel; above it, rolling savanna carries some of East Africa’s densest concentrations of giraffe, elephant, buffalo and lion. It is close enough to Kampala for a short trip, wild enough for a long one.

Ways to see the park

Four experiences that define a Murchison safari

Savanna game drives

Morning and evening drives on the Buligi and Nyamsika tracks for lion, elephant, giraffe, Jackson’s hartebeest and leopard.

Nile boat safari

Cruise upstream to the base of the falls past hippo pods, huge crocodiles and the birdlife of the papyrus banks.

Top of the falls

Walk to the point where the entire river is squeezed into a gap you could almost jump across. Rainbows most mornings.

Birding & the shoebill

The Nile–Lake Albert delta is the most reliable place in Uganda to see the prehistoric shoebill stork.

What guests say after the trip

They rebuilt our itinerary twice without a sigh, then delivered a flawless four days. Our guide spotted a leopard on the first drive.

Booking from abroad felt risky until the first email back. Clear quote, quick answers, and the boat trip to the falls was the highlight of Uganda.

We travelled with two kids and never felt rushed. The team sorted rhino tracking at Ziwa on the way up — the children still talk about it.

Before you ask

Murchison Falls trip questions

How many days do I need for Murchison Falls?

Two days is enough for the falls, one game drive and a boat cruise if you are short on time. Three days is the sweet spot and lets you slow down. Add a day for Ziwa rhino tracking or Budongo chimps.

When is the best time to visit?

The drier months of December–February and June–September give the easiest game viewing and road conditions. The green season is quieter, cheaper and excellent for birds, with short afternoon showers.

How do I get there from Kampala or Entebbe?

It is a 5–6 hour drive north, usually broken with a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Scheduled and charter flights land at Pakuba and Bugungu airstrips in about one hour if you prefer to fly.

What wildlife will I actually see?

Reliably: elephant, giraffe, buffalo, Uganda kob, hartebeest, warthog, hippo and crocodile. Very good chance of lion. Leopard and the shoebill stork take a little luck and the right guide.

Is it safe and family-friendly?

Yes. Uganda’s parks are well managed and Murchison is a popular family destination. Game drives and boat trips suit all ages; the top-of-the-falls walk needs reasonable footing.

What does a quote include?

Park entry fees, a private 4x4 with pop-up roof, fuel, an English-speaking driver-guide, the Nile launch cruise and full-board accommodation. Flights, visas, tips and drinks are listed separately.
