1 Day Top of the Falls Hike & Game Drive

This itinerary is designed for guests who are already based inside or beside the park and want to combine wildlife with Murchison’s single most dramatic viewpoint in one day, keeping the rest of their time free for the boat cruise or a rest. You spend the cool early hours on a game drive across the northern plains, break through the heat of the day, and then walk the short but steep trail to a series of platforms directly above the main waterfall – close enough to feel the spray on your face and the vibration of the water in the rock underfoot. It pairs naturally with the launch cruise on a separate half-day, so that you see the falls from both below and above.

Morning game drive on the Buligi loop

An early start, ideally on the tracks by 06:30 while the air is still cool and the predators have not yet lain up for the day. Depending on where you are staying, your guide takes the Paraa ferry across to the Buligi peninsula, the section of the park with the highest concentration of general game. You work the loop slowly: elephant and buffalo herds strung out toward the river, giraffe moving in single file against the low sun, oribi and bushbuck at the edge of the thickets, and, near the palm groves, the lion prides that hold this ground. Your guide will spend time reading tracks and fresh kills, and you have the roof up throughout for photography and a clear all-round view. You return to the lodge in the late morning for an early lunch and a rest through the hottest part of the day.

The hike to the top of the falls

In the mid-afternoon you drive to the car park at the top of the falls on the south bank and set out on foot with your guide. The climb takes about 45 minutes on a rocky, sometimes slippery path, and needs closed shoes and reasonable fitness. It rewards you completely: from the upper platforms you stand only a few metres from the point where the whole Victoria Nile, fifty metres wide upstream, is forced through a cleft you could almost jump across before dropping forty-three metres into the gorge. The noise is enormous, a permanent cloud of spray hangs over the rock, and on sunny afternoons a rainbow forms in it. Just downstream you can also see Uhuru Falls, a second channel that broke through during the huge floods of 1962. After as long as you want at the top, you walk back down and return to your lodge for the evening.

Getting there and travel times

This day trip is for guests already staying inside the park or at a lodge just outside the gate, so there is no long transfer involved. If your lodge is on the north bank you will use the Paraa ferry to reach the game tracks and again to reach the falls trailhead on the south bank; the ferry runs to a timetable and takes vehicles in small batches, and your guide will plan the day around the crossings.

This itinerary runs at budget, mid-range or luxury lodge level and the price changes with your choice, not the wildlife. Budget trips use simple government rooms or value tented camps; mid-range uses comfortable lodges with pools, en-suite rooms and river or plains views; luxury uses the small lodges built out over the Nile, with better guiding ratios and the option to fly. What it costs, as a guide

Because every trip is private and tailored there is no fixed price, but as a rough guide a mid-range-level version of this itinerary works out at around US$250 to US$400 per person, based on two people sharing and covering your private 4×4, fuel, driver-guide, all park entry fees, full-board accommodation and the activities in the plan. Solo travellers and very small groups pay more per head; four or more sharing pay less. Rates move with the season, so the figure in your quote is the real one, confirmed for your exact dates. Good to know before you travel

The park is rewarding all year. June to September and December to February are driest, with the firmest tracks and the most predictable game viewing; March to May and October to November are greener and quieter, with the best birding and lower lodge rates, in exchange for short heavy afternoon showers. Pack neutral-coloured layers for cool mornings and hot afternoons, a wide-brimmed hat and high-factor sunscreen, binoculars, a good insect repellent, a light rain jacket and a dry bag for boat trips. A yellow-fever certificate is required to enter Uganda, and malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for the whole country. The top-of-the-falls hike takes about 45 minutes on a steep path and needs closed shoes and reasonable fitness – it can always be skipped. Game drives and boat cruises have no minimum age. Uganda is a stable, welcoming country to travel in, and your guide carries a first-aid kit and stays in radio and phone contact throughout.
