The Kaniyo Pabidi Ecotourism Site sits inside Budongo Forest Reserve, in the southern part of the greater Murchison conservation area, right at the trailhead for chimpanzee tracking. Its accommodation is deliberately basic – a handful of simple bandas and a forest campsite run in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute and the National Forestry Authority – but the reason to stay is unbeatable: you wake up in the forest and join the first trek of the morning, ahead of anyone driving in from outside. The birding and the forest walks here are outstanding too.
Where it is
Inside Budongo Forest at Kaniyo Pabidi, off the Masindi-Paraa road in the southern sector. The chimpanzee-tracking trailhead is at the site itself. The top of the falls is around an hour’s drive north, and the Paraa ferry and the northern game-drive tracks are about an hour and a half, so this is a base for the forest first and the park second.
The setting
The site is a clearing in tall mahogany and ironwood forest, quiet except for birdsong and, at dawn, the calls of the chimps. There is a simple visitor centre, a ranger post and the bandas and campsite among the trees. It is genuinely in the forest – primates, forest birds and butterflies are all around – and the atmosphere is peaceful and a little wild.
Rooms
Basic bandas with a bed, a mosquito net and simple furnishings, sharing an ablution block with bucket or cold showers, plus a campsite for your own or hired tents. Bring a head torch and a warm layer – the forest is cool at night. Power is limited to a charging point at the centre.
Facilities and food
A simple canteen or self-catering kitchen – we usually arrange a cook and supplies for guests staying here – shared ablutions, and a fire circle. There is no Wi-Fi or reliable power. The site runs the chimpanzee treks (morning and afternoon), a guided forest nature walk and excellent birding walks; game drives and the launch cruise are arranged in the park proper.
