Twiga – Swahili for ‘giraffe’ – is a relaxed mid-range lodge on a quiet, grassy stretch of the north bank of the Nile, a short distance downstream from Paraa. It has direct river frontage, spacious en-suite cottages, a swimming pool and an easy, unhurried atmosphere, and because it is set apart from the cluster of lodges at Paraa it tends to feel calm and private even in high season. For its price it offers a lot of space and a genuine riverside position.

Where it is

On the north bank downstream of Paraa, roughly 15 to 20 minutes from the ferry crossing and the start of the Buligi game-drive loops, and a similar distance from the launch-cruise jetty. Being on the north bank means early game drives do not need a ferry crossing. The top of the falls is a ferry crossing and a drive away on the south bank.

The setting

The lodge sits on open lawns running down to the river, with the cottages spread along the bank and a central lounge, dining area and pool taking in the water view. Hippo graze the grounds at night, and the birding along the frontage is excellent. The mood is quiet and spacious – a place to relax between drives rather than a busy hub.

Rooms

Spacious en-suite cottages, each with a large bed under a mosquito net, a proper bathroom with hot water, a fan and a private veranda, most facing the river. The cottages are among the roomier options in the mid-range bracket. Power is solar and generator.

Facilities and food

A swimming pool overlooking the Nile, a restaurant and bar serving a set menu with choices and dietary flexibility, a lounge, a fire pit and slow Wi-Fi in the main area. Breakfast and lunch boxes are packed for early drives. The lodge arranges game drives, the launch cruise, the falls hike, birding and fishing.

Who it suits

Twiga suits travellers who want a peaceful, spacious, riverfront mid-range lodge on the north bank, within easy reach of the game tracks and the boat but away from the crowds. Couples and families both do well here. Guests wanting a large full-facility resort or a luxury camp should look at other properties.

What it costs, as a guide

Mid-range lodges here typically run from around US$110 to US$210 per person per night sharing a double, full board – the riverfront cottages and the better-known names toward the top of that band, the simpler cottage lodges toward the bottom. Park entry fees, your vehicle and guide, and the activities are all separate – a full safari quote from us wraps everything into one figure. Rates move with the season and the room type and change from year to year, so the prices here are indicative and for planning only; we always confirm the exact current rate for your dates directly with the property before you commit to anything.

How it fits your safari

Twiga Safari Lodge is on the north bank a little downstream of Paraa, so it is close to the ferry and the start of the northern game-drive tracks while feeling far quieter than the lodges right at Paraa. We use it for travellers who want a north-bank base for the game drives and the boat but would rather avoid the busier properties.

Good to know

Rates, room types and exact facilities change from season to season, so we confirm the current price and availability for your dates directly with the property before you commit to anything – there is no charge for this and no obligation. Power at most Murchison lodges is a mix of mains, solar and generator and may switch off overnight, so a head torch and a power bank are worth carrying; Wi-Fi, where it exists, is slow and best treated as a way to send a message home. Meals are usually full board, and any lodge will pack a breakfast or lunch box for an early game drive if we let the kitchen know. A yellow-fever certificate is required to enter Uganda and malaria prophylaxis is recommended for the whole country.
