Amuka Safari Lodge sits inside Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the 70-square-kilometre reserve near Nakitoma that protects Uganda’s only wild population of southern white rhino. It is the only lodge within the sanctuary, which is its whole point: staying here means you can do the rhino-tracking walk at the best time of day, and you fall asleep in a reserve full of birds, sitatunga and, of course, rhino. Where it is
Inside Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, off the Kampala-Gulu highway near Nakitoma, roughly three and a half hours’ drive north of Kampala and about two hours short of Murchison’s Kichumbanyobo Gate. This is the natural halfway point on the drive north, and staying overnight turns the rhino tracking from a daytime stop into a dawn or dusk activity when the animals are most active.
The setting
The lodge is set in the acacia woodland and grassland of the sanctuary, with the rooms spread out among the trees and a central lounge, dining area and pool. Because it is inside a protected reserve, the birding is excellent – the sanctuary has a big list, including the shoebill on its swamp – and there is genuine wildlife around the property. The atmosphere is comfortable and unhurried, a proper safari lodge rather than a roadside hotel.
Rooms
A mix of self-contained cottages and raised safari tents, all en-suite with a comfortable bed under a mosquito net, hot water and a private veranda. The rooms are spacious and well kept. Power is mains with a generator backup; there is no air-conditioning, but ceiling fans and the woodland setting keep the rooms comfortable.
Facilities and food
A central lounge and bar, a restaurant serving a buffet or set menu with dietary flexibility, and a swimming pool – welcome after the drive up. Wi-Fi is available in the public areas. The lodge coordinates the rhino tracking (on foot with a ranger, roughly one to two hours), and can arrange the sanctuary’s guided night walk, birding walks, and the shoebill canoe on the swamp.
Who it suits
Amuka suits any traveller on a three-night-or-longer Murchison itinerary who wants to do the rhino tracking at the right time of day and break the long drive north in comfort. It is particularly good for families and older travellers who would rather not do Kampala-to-Murchison in one push. On a tight two-day trip, rhino tracking is usually done as a daytime stop instead and this overnight is not needed.
