Nile Safari Lodge is one of the smallest and most design-conscious properties in the park – eight thatched bandas and glass-fronted cottages set among riverine forest and papyrus on the south bank of the Victoria Nile. It is run on solar power with a serious low-impact ethos, and the buildings are angled so that the river is the view from the bed, the bath and the deck. The lodge has been rebuilt and refined over the years and now sits firmly at the boutique-luxury end, with a spa, a pool cantilevered over the bank, and food and service to match.
Where it is
On the south bank, a short drive downstream from the Paraa ferry crossing. The top-of-the-falls trailhead is about 40 minutes away, and Budongo Forest is within reach for a morning chimpanzee trek. The northern game-drive circuit is a ferry crossing and a short drive – your guide plans the crossings around your drive times. Bugungu Gate, on the Hoima road, is roughly 40 minutes to the south, which also makes the lodge a sensible first or last night on a route through the oil region.
The setting
The lodge is tucked into a strip of forest and papyrus right on the riverbank, so it is green, shaded and completely private – you cannot see another building from the rooms. The main areas step down toward the water, with a lounge, a dining deck, a spa and an infinity pool that hangs over the bank. Monkeys and a rich bird list move through the canopy, hippo and elephant use the far bank, and the whole place is built to be quiet.
Rooms
Eight units – a mix of raised thatched bandas and more contemporary glass-fronted cottages – each large, en-suite, with a king or twin bed under a net, indoor and outdoor showers, a private deck over the river and, in the newer rooms, a plunge pool. There is a family option. All are solar-powered with generator backup and have no air-conditioning; the river position and the shade keep them comfortable. The design is the draw here – natural materials, clean lines, the river framed everywhere you look.
Facilities and food
A cantilevered infinity pool, a spa, a lounge and library, and a dining deck where meals are a well-executed set menu with choices and full dietary flexibility. There is a fire pit for the evenings and Wi-Fi in the main area. The lodge arranges all park activities and is happy to run a private boat, a bush breakfast or a sundowner on a sandbank.

Nile Safari Lodge suits couples, honeymooners and design-minded travellers who want a small, green, private camp with an emphasis on the river and a light footprint, and who are happy to cross the ferry for the game drives. It is one of the most romantic addresses in the park. Larger families and travellers wanting a big resort with lots of facilities should look elsewhere.

Nile Safari Lodge is on the south bank, ideal for the top-of-the-falls hike and a Budongo chimpanzee trek, with the northern game drives reached by the Paraa ferry. Because it is so small and so focused on the river, we often build a slower itinerary around it – more time on the deck and the water, fewer long drives – or pair a night here with a north-bank lodge for a game-drive-heavy trip.

Power at most Murchison lodges is a mix of mains, solar and generator and may switch off overnight, so a head torch and a power bank are worth carrying; Wi-Fi, where it exists, is slow and best treated as a way to send a message home. A yellow-fever certificate is required to enter Uganda and malaria prophylaxis is recommended for the whole country.
