Red Chilli Rest Camp is the original budget institution at Murchison Falls – the place most backpackers, overland trucks and cost-conscious safaris have stayed for years. It sits on the south bank just above the Paraa ferry crossing, which gives it a location the pricier lodges would envy, and it covers every budget tier below mid-range: en-suite bandas, simpler shared-bathroom bandas, dorm beds and a large campsite, all sharing a lively open-sided restaurant and bar. It is simple, friendly and extremely well placed.
Where it is
On the south bank, two or three minutes from the Paraa ferry – closer to the crossing than almost anything else in the park. That means the first ferry of the day gets you onto the northern game-drive tracks quickly, the launch-cruise jetty is a very short hop, and the top of the falls is around 45 minutes plus the ferry. Kichumbanyobo Gate on the Masindi road is about an hour south.
The setting
The camp sits in open bush on a rise near the river, with warthog and the occasional hippo on the grounds and a big central banda housing the bar and restaurant that is the social heart of the place. It is not quiet or exclusive – overland groups come and go – but it is cheerful, safe and easy, and the staff know the park inside out.
Rooms
Four levels: en-suite bandas with a private bathroom and a small porch; standard bandas with nearby shared bathrooms; bunk-bed dorms; and a grass campsite where you pitch your own tent or hire one with bedding. All beds have mosquito nets. Power is mains with generator backup and runs to charging points; hot water is solar.
Facilities and food
A large open restaurant and bar serving an a la carte menu – burgers, curries, breakfasts, cold beer – with vegetarian options and the ability to cater for allergies with notice, a shop for basics, hot showers, and Wi-Fi in the bar area. Breakfast and lunch boxes are available for early drives. The camp arranges shared and private game drives, the launch cruise and the falls hike, and is a good place to join a group drive to keep costs down.

Red Chilli suits budget travellers, backpackers, younger couples, overland groups and anyone who values a central location and a sociable atmosphere over privacy and polish. It is also fine for families happy with simple rooms. Travellers wanting quiet, a view or comfort should look at the mid-range lodges.

Budget lodges and camps at Murchison typically run from around US$40 to US$90 per person per night – a bed in a banda or a simple en-suite room, usually with breakfast, sometimes half or full board.
