10 Days Classic Uganda

Mama Washindi Lodge is a small, welcoming budget lodge on the south bank of the park with links to the local community – staff are largely from nearby villages and some of the produce is grown or bought locally. The rooms are simple and inexpensive, the atmosphere is friendly and low-key, and the position near the southern access points makes it a practical base for the falls and Budongo Forest. It is a good choice for travellers who want their spending to have a local benefit.

Where it is

On the south bank near the park’s southern access points, within reach of the top-of-the-falls trailhead and Budongo Forest for chimpanzee tracking. The Paraa ferry and the crossing to the northern game-drive tracks are around 40 minutes to an hour away.

The setting

The lodge sits in garden and bush on the south bank, small and quiet, with the rooms in a couple of blocks and a simple central dining area. The mood is homely and unhurried, and the staff make an effort. Birdlife around the grounds is good.

Rooms

Simple en-suite and standard rooms, each with a bed under a mosquito net, a fan, a private or nearby bathroom with a bucket or solar shower, and a small porch. Furnishings are basic but clean. Power is solar with a generator for the evenings.

Facilities and food

A central dining area serving simple set meals, often with a local dish on the menu, and vegetarian options on request; a small bar; and limited Wi-Fi. Breakfast and lunch boxes are provided for early drives. The lodge arranges game drives, the launch cruise, the falls hike and Budongo chimpanzee tracking.

Who it suits

Mama Washindi suits budget travellers who want a simple, friendly, community-linked base near the southern gates and do not need comfort or facilities. It works for backpackers, couples and small groups. Travellers wanting a pool, a view or a higher standard of room should choose a mid-range lodge.

What it costs, as a guide

Budget lodges and camps at Murchison typically run from around US$40 to US$90 per person per night – a bed in a banda or a simple en-suite room, usually with breakfast, sometimes half or full board. A dorm bed or a pitched-tent space is less again. Park entry fees, your vehicle and guide, and the activities are all separate – a full safari quote from us wraps everything into one figure. Rates move with the season and the room type and change from year to year, so the prices here are indicative and for planning only; we always confirm the exact current rate for your dates directly with the property before you commit to anything.

How it fits your safari

Mama Washindi Lodge is on the south bank near the southern access points, a budget base for the top-of-the-falls hike and Budongo Forest, with the northern game drives reached by the Paraa ferry. Staying here also puts a little money into the surrounding community, which some travellers like to factor in.

Good to know

Rates, room types and exact facilities change from season to season, so we confirm the current price and availability for your dates directly with the property before you commit to anything – there is no charge for this and no obligation. Power at most Murchison lodges is a mix of mains, solar and generator and may switch off overnight, so a head torch and a power bank are worth carrying; Wi-Fi, where it exists, is slow and best treated as a way to send a message home. Meals are usually full board, and any lodge will pack a breakfast or lunch box for an early game drive if we let the kitchen know. A yellow-fever certificate is required to enter Uganda and malaria prophylaxis is recommended for the whole country.
