Murchison River Lodge

Murchison River Lodge is one of the best-value properties in the park and a long-standing favourite with independent travellers and small-group safaris. It sits on 30 acres of natural bush on the south bank of the Victoria Nile, near Bugungu Gate, with the buildings spread out among the trees so that wildlife moves freely through the grounds and the river is a short walk away. What sets it apart is the range: en-suite thatched cottages, mid-priced safari tents and simple budget tents all share the same lounge, pool, restaurant and river view, so it works for almost any budget.

Where it is

On the south bank near Bugungu Gate, the southern entrance used by traffic coming up from Hoima. The top-of-the-falls trailhead is a reasonable drive, Budongo Forest is within reach for a morning chimpanzee trek, and the Paraa ferry – the crossing to the northern game tracks – is about 30 to 40 minutes away. It is a practical base for an itinerary that wants both banks.

The setting

The lodge is low-density by design, with cottages and tents tucked into 30 acres of woodland and grassland running down toward the Nile. Warthog, bushbuck and a long list of birds are regulars in the grounds, and the raised central lounge and the room verandas are positioned for the view. There is a swimming pool and a fire pit, and the whole place has an unpretentious, well-run feel.

Rooms

Three categories on one site. The en-suite thatched cottages are the most comfortable, with a proper bathroom, a wide veranda and a river or garden view. The furnished safari tents sit on raised decks with en-suite or shared bathrooms depending on the tent. The budget tents are simple twin-share canvas with shared ablutions. All beds have mosquito nets; power is solar with generator support.

Facilities and food

A central bar and restaurant serving a set three-course dinner with choices and full dietary flexibility, a swimming pool, a fire pit, a small shop and slow Wi-Fi in the main area. The kitchen packs breakfast and lunch boxes for early game drives. The lodge arranges game drives, the launch cruise, the falls hike, Budongo chimpanzee tracking, birding walks and sport fishing.

Who it suits

Murchison River Lodge suits value-conscious travellers, families, mixed-budget groups and anyone who wants a relaxed south-bank base with a real river setting and a pool. It is one of the safest mid-range choices in the park. Travellers who want to be right on the northern game tracks, or who want a small exclusive camp, may prefer other options.

What it costs, as a guide

Mid-range lodges here typically run from around US$110 to US$210 per person per night sharing a double, full board – the riverfront cottages and the better-known names toward the top of that band, the simpler cottage lodges toward the bottom. Park entry fees, your vehicle and guide, and the activities are all separate – a full safari quote from us wraps everything into one figure. Rates move with the season and the room type and change from year to year, so the prices here are indicative and for planning only; we always confirm the exact current rate for your dates directly with the property before you commit to anything.

How it fits your safari

Murchison River Lodge is on the south bank near Bugungu Gate, which makes it a strong all-rounder: close to the top-of-the-falls hike, within reach of Budongo Forest for chimpanzee tracking, and a short drive to the Paraa ferry for the northern game drives. Because it offers rooms at three price points on one property, we often use it when a group is travelling on mixed budgets and wants to stay together.

Good to know

Rates, room types and exact facilities change from season to season, so we confirm the current price and availability for your dates directly with the property before you commit to anything – there is no charge for this and no obligation. Power at most Murchison lodges is a mix of mains, solar and generator and may switch off overnight, so a head torch and a power bank are worth carrying; Wi-Fi, where it exists, is slow and best treated as a way to send a message home. Meals are usually full board, and any lodge will pack a breakfast or lunch box for an early game drive if we let the kitchen know. A yellow-fever certificate is required to enter Uganda and malaria prophylaxis is recommended for the whole country.
