5 Days Murchison Falls Family Safari

Murchison is one of the better Ugandan parks for children. The boat cruise holds everyone’s attention, the rhino walk at Ziwa is short and genuinely exciting, and every game drive is in your own private vehicle, so you set the pace and turn back whenever the youngest has had enough. This five-day version keeps driving days manageable, builds in pool afternoons and unscheduled time, and uses lodges with family rooms and food children will actually eat. There is no minimum age for the game drives or the boat, and the guide is briefed on keeping young travellers engaged – spotting games, tracking, and time behind the wheel of the parked vehicle.

Kampala to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

A short first drive of about three and a half hours to Ziwa, arriving for lunch. The rhino-tracking walk is roughly an hour on flat ground and children usually love getting close on foot to something so large. There is an early dinner and an early night after the drive; some children do the optional short night walk for bushbabies.

Ziwa into the park

You continue to Murchison in the morning, stopping at the top of the falls – hold small children’s hands near the viewpoints, the rock is wet. You check in near Paraa for three nights and spend the afternoon by the pool while the heat is at its worst.

Game drive and the launch cruise

A morning drive with the pop-up roof up for spotting – giraffe, elephant, warthog families and, with luck, lion. Back for lunch and a swim, then the afternoon launch cruise, which is the day’s highlight for most children: hippos surfacing right beside the boat, crocodiles sliding off the sandbars, and the falls thundering at the end.

A gentle activity day

A short guided nature walk near the falls or a second, shorter game drive in the morning, then a free afternoon. Some lodges can run a junior-ranger session or arrange a visit to a nearby village where children can see how families live, grind millet and fetch water.

The drive home

A final short drive or a pool morning, then the road south with a lunch stop, reaching Kampala or Entebbe in the afternoon.

Getting there and travel times

Murchison Falls is a five to six hour drive north of Kampala or Entebbe on good roads, and almost every trip breaks the journey with rhino tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, roughly halfway. If you would rather not drive, scheduled and charter light aircraft reach the Pakuba and Bugungu airstrips inside the park in about an hour from Entebbe, and a fly-in works well for a short trip or as one leg of a longer route. We confirm all transfers, ferry timings and internal flights before you travel.

Where you stay

Lodges are chosen for family rooms or interconnecting rooms, a swimming pool, a fenced or supervised setting, and a kitchen that will cook for younger children. What it costs, as a guide

Because every trip is private and tailored there is no fixed price, but as a rough guide a mid-range-level version of this itinerary works out at around US$1,350 to US$1,900 per person, based on two people sharing and covering your private 4×4, fuel, driver-guide, all park entry fees, full-board accommodation and the activities in the plan. Good to know before you travel

The park is rewarding all year. June to September and December to February are driest, with the firmest tracks and the most predictable game viewing; March to May and October to November are greener and quieter, with the best birding and lower lodge rates, in exchange for short heavy afternoon showers. Pack neutral-coloured layers for cool mornings and hot afternoons, a wide-brimmed hat and high-factor sunscreen, binoculars, a good insect repellent, a light rain jacket and a dry bag for boat trips. A yellow-fever certificate is required to enter Uganda, and malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for the whole country. The top-of-the-falls hike takes about 45 minutes on a steep path and needs closed shoes and reasonable fitness – it can always be skipped. Game drives and boat cruises have no minimum age. Uganda is a stable, welcoming country to travel in, and your guide carries a first-aid kit and stays in radio and phone contact throughout.
