3 Days Murchison Falls Self-Drive Safari

For confident drivers who want to set their own pace, this is a fully supported self-drive. We provide a well-maintained four-wheel-drive with a pop-up roof and high clearance, a detailed route pack with GPS tracks for the northern game-drive loop, pre-booked park entry, a reserved seat on the launch cruise, pre-paid accommodation, and 24-hour phone support. The roads are straightforward as far as Paraa; inside the park the tracks are unsigned in places, which is exactly why the notes matter. You keep the freedom to stop where you like, stay out as long as you want, and change the plan on the day.

Kampala to Murchison Falls

You collect the vehicle in the morning, run through the route pack and the vehicle handover with our team, and drive north on tarmac to Masindi – roughly four hours with a fuel and coffee stop. You can book a rhino-tracking slot at Ziwa on the way (the notes tell you where to turn). From Masindi it is a good murram road to the Kichumbanyobo Gate, where you pay your park fees; the procedure is in the pack. Inside the park, the notes route you to the top of the falls for a first look before you continue to your pre-booked lodge or campsite. Keep an eye on the fuel gauge – there is no fuel inside the park.

Self-guided game drive and the launch cruise

An early crossing on the Paraa ferry – check the timetable in your pack the night before – and a morning on the Buligi loop using the supplied GPS tracks. Drive slowly, keep to the tracks, switch the engine off at sightings, and give animals plenty of space. Around midday you return to Paraa, where your seat on the shared launch cruise is pre-booked; the boat leaves in the early afternoon for the three-hour run to the base of the falls. Morning drive and the return to Kampala

One more loop of the northern tracks at dawn while the animals are active, then you drive south, refuel in Masindi, and return the vehicle in Kampala or at the airport by evening. If you are flying out, allow for the drive time – we recommend a departure no earlier than 21:00.

Getting there and travel times

You collect and return the vehicle in Kampala or at Entebbe airport. The route pack covers the drive north in detail – the tarmac to Masindi (about four hours), the last fuel station, the last ATM, the Kichumbanyobo Gate procedure and fees, the Paraa ferry timetable, and turn-by-turn GPS tracks for the northern game-drive loop, which is unsigned in places. A guide can be added for any part of the trip, and we are on the phone 24 hours a day if anything goes wrong.

Where you stay

Two nights at a budget or mid-range lodge or a public campsite near Paraa, pre-booked in your name. If you are camping, the vehicle can be fitted with a rooftop tent, a fridge and cooking kit on request.

What it costs, as a guide

Because every trip is private and tailored there is no fixed price, but as a rough guide a budget-level version of this itinerary works out at around US$500 to US$700 per person, based on two people sharing and covering your private 4×4, fuel, driver-guide, all park entry fees, full-board accommodation and the activities in the plan. Solo travellers and very small groups pay more per head; four or more sharing pay less. Rates move with the season, so the figure in your quote is the real one, confirmed for your exact dates. Good to know before you travel

The park is rewarding all year. June to September and December to February are driest, with the firmest tracks and the most predictable game viewing; March to May and October to November are greener and quieter, with the best birding and lower lodge rates, in exchange for short heavy afternoon showers. Pack neutral-coloured layers for cool mornings and hot afternoons, a wide-brimmed hat and high-factor sunscreen, binoculars, a good insect repellent, a light rain jacket and a dry bag for boat trips. A yellow-fever certificate is required to enter Uganda, and malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for the whole country. The top-of-the-falls hike takes about 45 minutes on a steep path and needs closed shoes and reasonable fitness – it can always be skipped. Game drives and boat cruises have no minimum age. Uganda is a stable, welcoming country to travel in, and your guide carries a first-aid kit and stays in radio and phone contact throughout.
