Rabongo Forest is a small island of tropical rainforest surrounded by savanna in the south-eastern part of Murchison Falls National Park, and its campsite is one of the quietest places to stay in the whole conservation area. There are a few basic bandas and a campsite, an education centre, and a network of forest trails walked with a ranger – good for primates, forest birds and medicinal-plant walks. It is remote and simple, a place for travellers who want a night completely away from the safari circuit.
Where it is
In the south-eastern part of the park, reached by a rough track off the main Paraa road – roughly an hour and a half from the top of the falls and around two hours from the Paraa ferry and the northern game tracks. It is a genuine detour, so it fits an itinerary only when a forest night is the point.
The setting
The campsite is a clearing in the forest, surrounded by tall trees and loud with birdsong and, sometimes, chimpanzees passing through. There is an education centre used by school groups, a ranger post and the bandas and pitches. It is isolated, cool and green, and at night it is completely dark and quiet.
Rooms
Basic bandas with a bed, a mosquito net and simple furnishings, sharing a basic ablution block, plus space to pitch a tent. Bring a head torch and a warm layer. There is no mains power – a charging point at the centre only.
Facilities and food
A simple shelter for cooking and eating – self-catered, or we send a cook and supplies – a basic ablution block and a fire circle. No Wi-Fi or reliable power. The site offers guided forest walks of varying lengths, birding walks and a primate walk; everything else is arranged in the park proper.

Rabongo suits travellers who want a night of forest walks and total quiet and are happy with bandas or camping and self-catering. Birders and walkers enjoy it. It is not a base for the falls, the game drives or the boat, and not for anyone wanting comfort.

Budget lodges and camps at Murchison typically run from around US$40 to US$90 per person per night – a bed in a banda or a simple en-suite room, usually with breakfast, sometimes half or full board.
