Paraa Safari Lodge is the oldest hotel in Murchison Falls National Park and, for many people, still the most atmospheric. It stands on a bluff on the north bank of the Victoria Nile, directly above the Paraa ferry crossing, and was rebuilt in 1997 on the footprint of a 1959 lodge – the pool you swim in appeared in the 1951 filming of The African Queen. It is a full-service lodge rather than an intimate camp, with 54 rooms, a restaurant, a bar, a spa and a curio shop, and its position could hardly be better: the richest game-drive tracks in the park start a few minutes from the door, and the launch cruise departs from the jetty directly below.
Where it is
The lodge is on the north bank of the Nile at Paraa, the administrative centre of the park, right at the top of the road down to the vehicle ferry. That puts it about ten minutes from the start of the Buligi, Victoria and Albert game-drive loops – the short-grass plains that hold the park’s highest concentrations of lion, elephant, buffalo and Rothschild’s giraffe – and directly above the jetty where the Victoria Nile launch cruise begins. The top of the falls is a 45-minute drive and a ferry crossing away on the south bank; Kichumbanyobo Gate on the Masindi road is about an hour south, and Tangi Gate to the north roughly the same.
The setting
Paraa sits high enough above the river to catch the breeze and a long view downstream, with lawns running to the edge of the bluff and a terrace and pool built to make the most of the sunset. Warthog graze the gardens, vervet monkeys and baboons work the tree line, and hippo call from the river below at night. The architecture is solid safari-lodge – stone, timber and thatch, wide verandas, a big central lounge and dining room – rather than boutique, but it is comfortable, well kept and staffed by a team that has run this lodge for years. The birding from the terrace alone is excellent.
Rooms
There are 54 rooms across a few categories, all en-suite. The standard and superior rooms are in blocks along the bluff, most with a private balcony facing the Nile; the deluxe rooms and suites are larger, with better river views. Family rooms and interconnecting rooms are available. Rooms have mosquito nets, ceiling fans, hot water and mains power backed by a generator; they are not air-conditioned, but the elevation and the river breeze keep them comfortable. Ask us for a Nile-facing room – the view at dawn is the reason to stay here.
Facilities and food
The lodge has a terrace swimming pool with the downstream view, a restaurant serving buffet breakfast and dinner and a plated or buffet lunch, a bar, a small spa, a gift shop and slow Wi-Fi in the public areas. Meals cater for vegetarians and can accommodate allergies with notice, and the kitchen will pack a breakfast or lunch box for early game drives. The staff can arrange the launch cruise, the top-of-the-falls hike, a guided nature walk, sport fishing and a Nile sunset cruise.
Who it suits
Paraa suits travellers who want a comfortable, full-service base with an unbeatable location for game drives and the boat, and who do not mind a larger property with other guests around. It works well for families, for older travellers who want everything on site, and for anyone on a classic three- or four-day itinerary. Guests looking for an intimate, exclusive-feeling camp on the water are usually better matched to one of the small south-bank lodges.
What it costs, as a guide
Luxury lodges and tented camps at Murchison typically run from around US$250 to US$650 per person per night sharing a double, full board, with the small riverside camps at the top of that range and a suite or a fly-in package higher again. How it fits your safari
Paraa Safari Lodge sits on the north bank right beside the ferry crossing, which makes it the natural base for the game-drive days – you are on the Buligi tracks within minutes and the launch cruise leaves from the jetty directly below. We usually place one or two nights here in the middle of a Murchison itinerary, with a south-bank lodge or a gate lodge on either side if the route also takes in the top-of-the-falls hike or Budongo Forest.
