Fort Murchison Lodge is one of the more distinctive properties in the area – a hilltop lodge built in the style of a Swahili and Arabic fort, all thick walls, arches and towers, with a commanding view over the Nile valley and the plains toward the park. It sits just outside Tangi Gate on the northern side, close enough for early game drives, and it offers two tiers of accommodation: comfortable self-contained rooms in the fort itself and lower-cost non-self-contained tents in the grounds, which makes it flexible for mixed-budget groups.
Where it is
Just outside Tangi Gate, on the northern approach to the park via Purongo and Gulu. The northern game-drive tracks are a short drive through the gate, so first-light drives are easy. The lodge is a natural stop on a route that comes in or out of the park to the north, and about a 30-to-40-minute drive from the Paraa jetty for the launch cruise.
The setting
The lodge stands on a low hill with a genuine panorama – the Nile, the valley and the escarpment – and the fort architecture makes the most of it with rooftop terraces and shaded courtyards. The grounds have good birding. It is a striking, atmospheric place that feels different from the standard safari lodge.
Rooms
Two types. The self-contained rooms are built into the fort structure, en-suite, with mosquito nets, hot water and a fan; some have the valley view. The non-self-contained tents in the garden are simpler and cheaper, with shared ablution blocks. All beds have nets. Power is solar and generator.
Facilities and food
A restaurant and bar with a rooftop terrace, serving a set menu with choices and dietary flexibility, a lounge, and slow Wi-Fi in the main area. There is a small pool. Breakfast and lunch boxes are packed for early drives. The lodge arranges game drives, the launch cruise, the falls hike and birding, and can arrange community and cultural visits in nearby Purongo.
Who it suits
Fort Murchison suits travellers who like architecture and a view, groups spanning a couple of budgets, and anyone routing in or out of the park via the north. It is a good first or last night. Guests who want to be right on the river, or inside the park gates, may prefer other lodges.
What it costs, as a guide
Mid-range lodges here typically run from around US$110 to US$210 per person per night sharing a double, full board – the riverfront cottages and the better-known names toward the top of that band, the simpler cottage lodges toward the bottom.
