Sambiya River Lodge is a long-established mid-range lodge set in mature tropical gardens on the northern side of the park, close to the Sambiya River and the road to the top of the falls. It is the nearest accommodation to the top-of-the-falls trailhead, so guests staying here can do that spectacular short hike before the day-trippers arrive or in the soft light of late afternoon. The lodge itself is comfortable and green, with en-suite cottages, a swimming pool and a large thatched central area.
Where it is
In the northern part of the park near the Sambiya River, the closest lodge to the top-of-the-falls trailhead – a short drive rather than the 45-minute-plus approach from lodges near Paraa. The Paraa ferry and the start of the northern game-drive circuit are about 30 minutes away, and the launch-cruise jetty is at Paraa. Kichumbanyobo Gate on the Masindi road is roughly 45 minutes south.
The setting
The lodge is built among tall trees and established gardens, so it is shaded and full of birdsong, with monkeys in the canopy and a genuinely tropical feel. The central lounge and dining room sit under a big thatched roof, and there is a swimming pool in the garden. It is quieter and more enclosed than the open-plains lodges, which some guests much prefer after a hot day out.
Rooms
En-suite cottages and rooms spread through the gardens, each with a mosquito net, hot water, a fan and a veranda. The rooms are comfortable and well kept if fairly traditional in style. Family rooms are available. Power is mains with generator backup.
Facilities and food
A swimming pool, a large thatched restaurant and bar serving buffet or set meals with dietary options, a lounge and slow Wi-Fi in the main area. Breakfast and lunch boxes are provided for early starts. The lodge arranges the falls hike, game drives, the launch cruise, birding and fishing.
Who it suits
Sambiya suits travellers who want the top-of-the-falls hike done properly, who like a shaded garden setting over an open-plains one, and who are happy with a comfortable, traditional mid-range lodge. Families and older travellers do well here. Guests who want a riverfront room or a contemporary design should look elsewhere.
What it costs, as a guide
Mid-range lodges here typically run from around US$110 to US$210 per person per night sharing a double, full board – the riverfront cottages and the better-known names toward the top of that band, the simpler cottage lodges toward the bottom. Park entry fees, your vehicle and guide, and the activities are all separate – a full safari quote from us wraps everything into one figure. Rates move with the season and the room type and change from year to year, so the prices here are indicative and for planning only; we always confirm the exact current rate for your dates directly with the property before you commit to anything.
How it fits your safari
Sambiya River Lodge is the closest lodge to the top-of-the-falls hike, which makes it ideal for an itinerary that wants to do that walk at the quietest time of day – early morning or late afternoon – rather than in the midday heat. It is also well placed for the northern game drives via the Paraa ferry, so it works as a single base for a classic three-day trip.
Good to know
Rates, room types and exact facilities change from season to season, so we confirm the current price and availability for your dates directly with the property before you commit to anything – there is no charge for this and no obligation. Power at most Murchison lodges is a mix of mains, solar and generator and may switch off overnight, so a head torch and a power bank are worth carrying; Wi-Fi, where it exists, is slow and best treated as a way to send a message home. Meals are usually full board, and any lodge will pack a breakfast or lunch box for an early game drive if we let the kitchen know. A yellow-fever certificate is required to enter Uganda and malaria prophylaxis is recommended for the whole country.
