2 Days Murchison Falls Budget Camping Safari

This is the lowest-cost way to experience Murchison Falls, and it cuts the price without cutting the safari itself. You still track rhino at Ziwa, do a full game drive on the northern plains, and take the launch cruise to the foot of the falls; what changes is where you sleep – a proper walk-in tent at a public campsite near Paraa, with a shared bathroom block and dinner around a communal fire. Wildlife moves freely through the camp, and lying in a tent listening to hippo grazing a few metres away is part of the appeal rather than a drawback. It suits backpackers, students and anyone who would rather spend their money on more days in the bush than on a lodge room.

Drive north, rhino tracking at Ziwa, and pitch camp

An early departure from Kampala, driving north on tarmac with a mid-morning stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to track wild southern white rhino on foot with a ranger – one to two hours, on flat ground, at close range. After lunch you continue into the park through Kichumbanyobo Gate and drive to the public campsite near Paraa, where your tents are set up in a clearing among the trees. If there is light left, your guide takes you to the top of the falls before you return for dinner around the fire. After dark a ranger will point out the hippo that come up out of the river to graze the camp lawns.

Game drive, launch cruise, and the drive back

You break camp early and cross on the first ferry for a game drive on the Buligi tracks while the animals are still on the move – giraffe, elephant, buffalo, kob and, with luck, lion near the palm groves. Back at Paraa, you take the mid-morning or early-afternoon launch cruise upstream to the base of the falls, past hippo pods and basking crocodiles, finishing beneath the roaring column of water. From the jetty you drive out of the park and back to Kampala, with a lunch stop in Masindi, arriving in the evening.

Getting there and travel times

Murchison Falls is a five to six hour drive north of Kampala or Entebbe on good roads, and almost every trip breaks the journey with rhino tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, roughly halfway. If you would rather not drive, scheduled and charter light aircraft reach the Pakuba and Bugungu airstrips inside the park in about an hour from Entebbe, and a fly-in works well for a short trip or as one leg of a longer route. We confirm all transfers, ferry timings and internal flights before you travel.

Where you stay

You camp one night at a simple public site near Paraa – a walk-in tent already pitched for you (or your own, if you prefer), a shared ablution block with cold and sometimes warm showers, a covered cooking and dining area, and a communal fire. Bring or hire a sleeping bag; we can provide one, a roll mat and a head torch. The northern public sites in particular are unfenced, and hippo graze between the tents after dark and warthog wander through by day – a ranger escorts you to the ablutions at night. It is basic, but the location, right in the middle of the wildlife, is better than many lodges.

What it costs, as a guide

Because every trip is private and tailored there is no fixed price, but as a rough guide a budget-level version of this itinerary works out at around US$350 to US$450 per person, based on two people sharing and covering your private 4×4, fuel, driver-guide, all park entry fees, full-board accommodation and the activities in the plan. Good to know before you travel

The park is rewarding all year. June to September and December to February are driest, with the firmest tracks and the most predictable game viewing; March to May and October to November are greener and quieter, with the best birding and lower lodge rates, in exchange for short heavy afternoon showers. Pack neutral-coloured layers for cool mornings and hot afternoons, a wide-brimmed hat and high-factor sunscreen, binoculars, a good insect repellent, a light rain jacket and a dry bag for boat trips. A yellow-fever certificate is required to enter Uganda, and malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for the whole country. The top-of-the-falls hike takes about 45 minutes on a steep path and needs closed shoes and reasonable fitness – it can always be skipped. Game drives and boat cruises have no minimum age. Uganda is a stable, welcoming country to travel in, and your guide carries a first-aid kit and stays in radio and phone contact throughout.
